Limited edition makeup palettes make wonderful holiday presents. There’s an air of exclusivity about them because they’re available only for a short period of time and their packaging is more luxurious and opulent than regular palettes. Here are my five favorite makeup palettes for the 2010 gift-giving season.
(1) Trish McEvoy: All Dressed Up Makeup Planner, $150
Conveniently organized into Trish’s patented Makeup Planner, the 18-piece All Dressed Up Collection features a beautifully coordinated wardrobe of Trish essentials plus the latest eye and lip colors to choose from depending on your mood. It comes with an instructional DVD which allows you to follow along with Trish and learn the look step-by-step.

*Alternative Trish McEvoy gift: you can give Trish McEvoy makeup brushes instead of a makeup palette. She makes high quality makeup brushes for eyes, face and lips. My picks are the Brush 45 for eyes and the Brush Powder Brush (doubles as a brush for loose/pressed powder and blush).
(2) Bobbi Brown: Modern Classic Lip & Eye Palette, $75
This palette will suit all skin tones with its beautiful gray, bronze and plum shadows. It also contains four shades of glitter lip gloss.
*Alternative Bobbi Brown gift: Like Trish Mc Evoy, Bobbi Brown makes excellent makeup brushes and good skincare products. I like her Intensive Serum. She has a summery fragrance called Beach which is light and playful.
(3) Dior: Deluxe Travel Palette, $75
This sleek red patent cannage palette features a mini Diorshow Extase Mascara, a mini pink Ultra-Gloss, a medium pressed powder, a blush and six eye shadows.
*Alternative Dior gift: Dior is also known for its fragrances although in recent years, it has reformulated old classics such as Diorissimo to the point where the “new” formulation smells nothing like the haunting, complex original. Thankfully, Dior has issued “La Collection Christian Dior”, a set of exclusive, elegant fragrances with names such as Ambre Nuit, Bois d’Argent, Mitzah, etc. You can’t find them in department stores but you can order them online.
(4) Guerlain: L’Or Imperiale loose powder, $85
Not at all a makeup palette, rather a silky loose powder that creates a light-reflecting veil with a subtle golden iridescent finish. Perfect for holiday parties! It comes beautifully packaged in a reinterpretation of the mythical Guerlain Bee Bottle.
*Alternative Guerlain gift: Guerlain is one of the oldest and most venerated perfume houses in the world. It has created some of the world’s most alluring fragrances. I suggest L’Heure Bleue, one of the mysterious Guerlain fragrances created in the 1912 by Jacques Guerlain.
(5) Laura Mercier: Color Wardrobe, $98
This two-tiered compact holds 6 eye shadows, 3 cheek colors, 6 lip stains and 2 finishing lip glazes. The colors can be worn by women with different skin tones and they are ideal for day or night.
*Alternative Laura Mercier gift: Laura Mercier makes great makeup brushes, like Bobbi Brown and Trish McEvoy, and also fragrance. My favorites are the Minuit Enchanté (a deep, dark scent) and the lighter, more spring-like Eau de Lune (a romantic floral).
